Table of Contents There were many issues that followed the successful rescue mission. Most of them were known by the participants in one way or another. However, a very important one remained a secret for all time and was known only by one person, Spock.

During his brief, but extremely important contact with Kirk while he was in sickbay, he performed a miracle of sorts. By melding with James T. Kirk, he was able to 'remove' the troubling memories of captivity. This helped his friend in ways that neither McCoy nor even Kirk himself could know or understand. It also gave Spock a unique insight into what his friend had endured for almost eight years and why the man was so troubled.

The countless abuses had not only resulted in much physical damage, but far worse were the mental aspects of the captivity. It was the primary reason for the slow healing and his troubled nights and even the nightmares. The meld was a first step, and Kirk still required time to complete his recovery. But the process of returning to normal was greatly accelerated and the man's suffering was eased considerably.

It took a long time for Spock to sort through it as well and he never would fully understand it. However, it made a lasting, and very strong impression on him, one that would endure for his entire life. He worried constantly about James Kirk and visited, or at least contacted him, regularly to be sure that all was well for many years to come.

The strong impression had also prompted the Vulcan to pursue the search for Edith's daughter in hopes she could provide the much needed support necessary for Kirk's recovery. Fortunately, it had.

However, the most important result of these impressions was a nagging thought of how he, Spock the Ambassador, could ensure that it would never happen again to anyone else. It took many years, but eventually Spock believed he found a way.

Long after Kirk was gone, it finally came to Spock. It was as if a seed had been planted in his mind during that critical meld and took time to germinate. It grew until he began to realize that he alone might be able to eliminate the possibility of the horrible treatments, once and for all.

After making a few inquiries regarding various aspects of his plan, he set out to do what most would consider impossible. He would travel to Romulus and start a movement to bring the teachings of Surak to the Romulan people.

He realized that his inquiries had raised a few red flags, so before his action could be prevented, he traveled into Romulan space. His presence was discovered by Federation and Romulan personnel as well, after the fact. But by then, his teachings had already found a large number of receptive students. The movement had begun.

It was a truly remarkable start. So much so that Spock had a 'feeling,' one of optimism. Perhaps it might eventually lead to a reunification of Vulcan and Romulan people. If the Federation and Klingon Empire could come together after many years of open warfare, then there was hope for the Vulcanoid people.

Time would tell. It probably would not happen his lifetime, but Spock now felt there was a chance for an understanding between the two worlds and then perhaps the entire Federation and Romulan Empire as well. After all, it was only logical.
