... Designed specifically to provide armed escort for unarmed vessels, these ships have medium armament and shielding but sensitive electronic surveillance and monitoring equipment. Escorts travel in groups, always within transporter range of the vessels they protect, and thus they have
only medium-range capability. In StarFleet Merchant Marine and Military command service, these vessels have sensitive motion detectors to combat Romulan cloaking devices. Lighter than the similarly-sized destroyers, these vessels have medium warp and sub-light maneuver capabilities.
